Carbon Equivalents
Updated: Jan 2, 2022

When I say carbon, I really mean carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).
The most common green house gas is CO2. However, there are other green house gases, like methane. Methane has a much greater warming effect than CO2.
1 kg of methane is equivalent to releasing 84 kg's of CO2.
To keep things simple for us, scientists use carbon equivalents to covert the methane emissions into a common unit to measure green house gas pollution.
Carbon equivalents give us a common unit to compare the impacts of emitting different greenhouse gases.
